Editor Assigns Self

Editors may assign themselves to papers, so they are able to execute all tasks in the workflow.

For example: A small Journal Office may have Joe Smith acting in an administrative capacity and as Editor-in-Chief.  He receives all the submissions, and is responsible for assigning them to two other Editors, as well as himself.  This feature allows the Editor to assign himself to the paper so that it shows up in his ‘New Assignments’ box, therefore allowing him to perform all the tasks necessary to push the manuscript through the review and approval processes.
