Inaugurated by William Rainey Harper in 1882 and formerly known as The American Journal of Theology, The Journal of Religion promotes critical and systematic inquiry into the meaning and import of religion. Not limited by ideological orientation, the Journal embraces all areas of theology (biblical, historical, ethical, constructive) as well as other types of religious studies (literary, social, psychological, philosophical).
